We arrived to the Port in Athens on a beautiful 60 degree and sunny day! We were so happy that the weather was perfect because due to rain we had to miss our stop in Olympia, Greece. I have to admit, I was a little bit of a child and not happy about missing a port. In hindsight, if we were going to miss a stop, that was the one to miss. I still feel like we should have all received a free cruise or something:)
Our friend Karis had studied abroad in Athens and a friend was living and working there. He graciously took us around and gave a great tour of the city and all the highlights. We met him up at the Parthenon and toured that area. Nearby, was Mars Hill where Paul had given his sermon to the Athenians. We ventured on through the city seeing more ruins and stopped at the The Poet to get Athenian Olympic Sandals made. Many famous people had sandals made here, so we felt kind of cool!
We of course had to make a pit stop for some yummo Gyro! That may have been one of the best I have ever had! We saw the changing of the guard, walked the main shopping streets, tried local dessert, and did a little shopping.
Overall, it was a beautiful day and we thoroughly enjoyed having a "local" show us around. If you are planning to go to Athens, I have mentioned before, Rick Steve's books have great walking tours that allow you to see the highlights and main sites. I think Athens major sites are very doable in one day as well. If you have extra time and you can get to Corinth, I have heard that is worth seeing!
