Holiday Travels Part 2: Heidelberg and Trier

One day while Ryan was at work, I took the in-laws to Heidelberg.  This is another great town about 45 minutes away from us.  It is pretty famous for its Castle, a University, and it used to have an Army base that recently has shut down.

I had never been to Heidelberg either, so it was great that we all got to explore it together.  The even better part was the Christmas market was going on and we got to see that as well.

There is a path or a stairway to reach the Castle.  We used the stairway up and the path down.  We did not pay to get into the Castle, but we did explore the grounds.  For several weekends, there is a Christmas market at the Castle, but it had just ended the day before we arrived.

The market at Heidelberg was nice.  It had some nice booths, lots of Gluhwein and treats.  We walked along the main strip, and just meandered through town.  There was nothing major to do here, but it did seem to have some great nightlife and restaurants.  If we had time to cross the bridge, there were some nice hikes on the other side of town.  If we make it back there, we may try to see a little bit more.

****1-10 Christmas Market Score:
Christmas Market score: 6.  Quaint town, lots of booths, best Crepes I’ve ever had, and a Castle view!

Another day, we decided to venture up to Trier.  This was another town that we had visited before, but it’s an easy drive from the KMC area and full of Roman history.  Lots of the Christmas market had been taken down, but there were some little parts still open.  We explored some of the Roman Ruins, the two Cathedrals, and explored the streets.  We enjoyed some Gluhwein while watching kids ice skate, and then stopped for some dinner.  It was a quick trip, but we got to see the highlights and enjoy the Christmas atmosphere.

****1-10 Christmas Market Score
Trier Market Score: 7.  Cute town, lots to see if you get sick of the market, great food, great wine, lots of Roman history, not too crowded.
